2019. Hardcover. New. Inferno is the first part of Italian writer Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. It is followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. The Inferno tells the journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torment located within the Earth; it is the ""realm of those who have rejected spiritual values by yielding to bestial appetites or violence, or by perverting their human intellect to fraud or malice against their fellowmen"".As an allegory, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin. The story begins with the narrator (here, the poet) being lost in a dark wood where he is attacked by three beasts which he cannot escape. He is rescued by Virgil, who is sent by Beatrice (Dante's ideal woman). Together, they begin the journey into the nine Circles of Hell. Henry Francis Cary, born on Dec. 6, 1772, in Gibraltar, was an English biographer and translator, best known for his blank verse translation of The Divine Comedy of Dante. He was educated at the grammar schools of Rugby, Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham, and at Christ Church, Oxford, which he entered in 1790 and studied French and Italian literature. While at school, he regularly contributed to the Gentleman's Magazine, and published a volume of Sonnets and Odes. Educated at the University of Oxford,Cary took Anglican orders in 1796 and was later assistant librarian in the British Museum, a post which he held for about eleven years. He published biographies of English and French poets and translated the ancient Greek writers Aristophanes and Pindar. He took holy orders and in 1797, became vicar of Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire. About The Book : Shakespeare's Measure for Measure centers around the fate of Claudio, who is arrested by Lord Angelo, the temporary leader of Vienna. Angelo is left in charge by the Duke, who pretends to leave town but instead dresses as a friar to observe the goings-on in his absence. Angelo is strict, moralistic, and unwavering in his decision-making; he decides that there is too much freedom in Vienna and takes it upon himself to rid the city of brothels and unlawful sexual activity. Laws against these behaviours and institutions already exist, and Angelo simply decides to enforce them more strictly. Claudio is arrested for impregnating Juliet, his lover, before they were married. Although they were engaged and their sexual intercourse was consensual, Claudio is sentenced to death in order to serve as an example to the other Viennese citizens. About The Author : William Shakespeare ( 1564–1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the ""Bard of Avon"" (or simply ""the Bard""). His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. They also continue to be studied and reinterpreted. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608, among them Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and collaborated with other playwrights. About The Book : He following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose, his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, In those Tales which have been taken from the Tragedies, as my young readers will perceive when they come to see the source from which these stories are derived, Shakespeare’s own words, with little alteration, recur very frequently in the narrative as well as in the dialogue; I have wished to make these Tales easy reading for very young children. To the utmost of my ability. I have constantly kept this in my mind; but the subjects of most of them made this a very difficult task. About the Book :- The author was deputed at Kabul on special political duty in the year of 1870’s. During his stay in Afghanistan, he narrated his account in a very compact manner. He drew a beautiful sketch of Afghanistan and its history, interests and aspirations of the native races which served as a hand book for the officers who were deputed to Afghanistan. Divided into 13 chapters the book discusses a fine picture of the Afghans and their history, British relations with this country. A sketch of Sher Ali, the then king of Afghanistan; it then devotes a chapter each to the various tribes that made up the Afghan nation namely the Pathan, the Yusufzai, the Afridi, the Khaltak, the Dadice, the Ghilji, the Taijk and the Hazarah. He wrote several books based on his explorations in the region during the course of his army career and also studied and wrote on the languages and culture of Afghanistan. For, to know the history, interests, and aspirations of a people, is half the battle gained in converting them to loyal, contended and peaceable subjects to willing participators and active protectors of the welfare of the Empire towards which from position and self-interest, they naturally gravitate. About the Author :- Henry Walter Bellew MRCP was an Indian-born British medical officer who worked in Afghanistan. He wrote several books based on his explorations in the region. He was with the Bengal Army, assistant surgeon in the Bengal Medical Service, and was posted along with Harry Burnett Lumsden and Peter Lumsden on the 1857 mission to Afghanistan. He was in Mardan with the Corps of Guides in the 1860s, and was then in Peshawar as a civil surgeon. He was appointed political officer at Kabul. During the 1857 rebellion, he was in Afghanistan and when he visited Kandahar along with the Lumsdens there were questions on whether the three should be put to death from the son of Dost Mohammad Ghulam Hyder. About the Author: - William Crooke was a British Orientalist and a key figure in the study and documentation of Anglo-Indian folklore. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, and was educated at Erasmus Smith's Tipperary Grammar School and Trinity College, Dublin. Crooke joined the Indian Civil Service. While an administrator in India, he found abundant material for his researches in the ancient civilizations of the country. He found ample time to write much on the people of India, their religions, beliefs and customs. He was also an accomplished hunter. Although Crooke was a gifted administrator, his career in the ICS lasted only 25 years because of personality clashes with his superiors. He returned to England and in 1910, he was chosen to be the president of the Anthropological Section of the British Association. In 1911, having been for many years a member of the council of the Folklore Society, he was elected its president. Re-elected as president of the society in the following year, he then became the editor of its journal, Folk-lore, in 1915. He continued in this last position until his death at a nursing home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 25 October 1923. About The Book -: The aim of this book is to present a sketch of the economic life of India at the opening of the seventeenth century, that is to say, at the period immediately antecedent to the first appearance of those new forces which were destined to exercise an increasing and eventually predominant influence on the development of the country. If it be permissible to assign a precise date to what is essentially a gradual transition, we may say that the medieval history of India ended, and the modem history began, in the year 1608, when the English ship Hector reached Surat. Starting from this date, it is possible to trace the economic story of the next three centuries, first in the narratives of travellers and the early Letter-Books of the East India Company, and then in the more copious official records and publications of later times, so that a well-defined period for study is within the reach of our schools and universities, provided that a suitable beginning can be made. This book attempts to supply such a beginning, by furnishing an account of the economic position at the close of Akbar’s reign. About The Author -: William Harrison Moreland CSI CIE (1868 – 1938) was a British civil servant who served in the Indian Civil Service and wrote several books on the economic history of India based on Mughal, Dutch, and Portuguese sources. He studied at Clifton College, Somerset (1881-1886) and joined the Indian Civil Services spending probation studying at Trinity College, Cambridge and receiving an LL.B. in 1889 after which he went to India. He served as assistant commissioner (1894), joint magistrate (1897), magistrate and collector (1899) and became Director of Land Records and Agriculture in the United Provinces in 1899. He simplified the system of land revenue. He retired in 1914 due to loss of hearing but worked as an advisor in Central India for two years. Returning to England, he began to study the economic history of India. He published several books including: The Agriculture of the United Provinces , The Revenue Administration of the United Provinces, An Introduction to Economics for Indian Students, India at the death of Akbar, India from Akbar to Aurangzeb. The Agrarian System of Moslem India (1929). The Title 'India at the death of Akbar: An Economic Study written/authored/edited by W. H. Moreland', published in the year 2021. New Delhi, India: Penguin, 1992 The sacred city of Banaras on the River Ganges is one of the oldest living cities in the worldas old as Jerusalem, Athens and Peking. It is the place where Shiva, the Lord of All, is said to have made his permanent home since the dawn of creation. There are few cities in India as traditionally Hindu and as symbolic of the whole of Hindu culture as Banaras. In this eloquent, finely observed study, Diana Eck shows how the city, over the centuries, has become a lens through which the Hindu vision of the world is precisely focused. She reveals the spiritual and historical resonance of this holy place where great sages such as the Buddha and Shankara taught, where ashrams, palaces, and universities were built, where God has been imagined and imaged in a thousand ways. Eck describes the rites of its temples, the busy life of its riverfront, and the exuberance of its festivals. She narrates how people travel from all over India to Banaras for the privilege of dying a good death here, for they believe that on the banks of the River Ganges where the atmosphere of devotion is improbable in its strength? it is possible to be released from this earthly round forever. In her account of the sacred history, geography, and art of the city, its elaborate and thriving rituals, its myths and literature, and its importance to pilgrims and seekers, Diana Eck uses her wealth of scholarship to make the Hindu tradition come powerfully alive so that we come to understand the meaning that this sacred city holds for the millions of believers who have been coming here for over 2,500 years. 2019. Hardcover. Crooke received various honours later in life, including degrees from the universities of Oxford and Dublin and a fellowship of the British Academy.
