[From Preface] The scope of the combined essays is of necessity very broad, ranging as it does from a conception of the universe to the trend of modern civilization. Thus the first chapter deals not alone with the genesis of the earth but of the parent solar system, and, the earth having been established, its history is traced until the time of its becoming a fit environment for the abode of life. The second lecture deals with the changing lines of demarcation between land and sea, the rise and growth of continents, the formation and severance of land-bridges, and the climatic changes which are recorded for geologic time. The physical environment once established, Professor Woodruff tells what we know and do not know of the origin of life. This is largely an academic discussion of the several theories which have been advanced to account for the evolution of lifeless into living matter, for from the nature of the problem evidences of direct observation are not available. The lecture on the pulse of life attempts to link up cause and effect; to find those forces which are responsible for the more or less rhythmic accelerations of evolution shown by the fossil record. The main cause is found to be climatic change, which in turn has as a chief controlling factor earth shrinkage and the consequent warping of the crust discussed in the second lecture. The pulse of life applies not alone to the evolution of animals and plants, but also to mankind. How climatic changes have influenced the growth of civilization and the formation of racial characteristics of mentality is set forth in the last lecture, that by Doctor Huntington. In so far as possible, these essays are the fruits of the original research of their several authors, which in certain instances are set forth here for the first time. The treatment of the entire subject and the marshaling of the facts thus assembled are entirely new., Yale Univ. Press, 1920-01-01, 2.5, Very Good+. Very Good+ Shai LeMora - A Gift to the Awesome One - Prayer - An Antidote"Isaac entreated Hashem opposite his wife, because she was barren Hashem allowed Himself to be entreated by him, and his wife Rebecca conceived" (Bereishis, 25:21)"R Yitzchok asked: Why were our forefathers barren? Because HaKodosh Baruch Hu desires the prayers of the righteous" (Yevamot, 64A)Modern telecommunications have given us the ability to communicate quickly and efficiently over vast distances While under the influence and in the shadow of the modern world - with its labor-saving devices and its real time automated systems - many people have nevertheless been driven to the brink of despair in their search for meaning: a system of values with which to fill the void of their existence As a consequence of this crisis of the soul, and as a means of counteracting these feelings of despair, many of them are gravitating to prayer in increasing numbersTo reconnect with G-d, to seek His mercy, to re-attach oneself to his Source and liberate his soul - one can arrive at this elevated spiritual plane through prayer As it was with our forefathers, so it is with us - prayer is a potent means to awaken the (midat harahamim) - the mercifulness of the A-mighty, on behalf of the individual, the family, the community, and Klal YisroelYitzchok prayed to Hashem (lnochah ishto) - opposite his wife, because she was barren Hashem accepted his prayer, and Yitzchok's wife Rivkah conceived Rashi comments: "Although they both prayed, Hashem accepted his prayer, and I not hers For you cannot compare the prayer of a righteous person whose parents are righteous to the prayer of a righteous person whose parents are wicked Therefore, He responded to him, not to her" (Bereshit 25:21)Rabbeinu Bachya states that the power of prayer is so great that it can change the laws of nature It can save one from danger and nullify a Heavenly decreeThe Noam Elimelech explains that prayer has the power to restore the spiritual, (kesher), connecting the individual to the Al-mighty A (kesher) connection which is severed, when one commits a transgression, causing that direct line of communication to be lost The (tzadik), righteous person through his enthusiastic prayer and exalted spiritual character, is able to intercede on behalf of such individuals, and restore the lost connection The term (tefilla) prayer is defined as (hitkashrut) - connection, as we find in the Torah, Rochel exclaims: "Naftoli Elokim niftalti im-ahoti gam-yochalti" - "I have fought a Divine struggle with my sister and I have prevailed" Rashi cites the opinion of Menachem ben Seruk, who explains that the word (naftoli) derives from the root (pei-tet-lmed) - the condition of being attached, bound togetherA similar thought is developed in the Menoras Ha'maor, Ner Shlishi, who asks Why are the morning prayers called (posukei dzimra) - verses of song? The term (zemer), he explains, is from ,the same root as the word (tizmor) - pruning, as in (vkarmecha lo tizmor) - "Your vineyard you shall not prune, nor cut" (Vayikra 25:4), meaning that, by means of our introductory prayers, we are pruning, removing all impediments to prayer, and establishing a firm (kesher), a direct line of communication, between ourselves and HashemThe author presents us with an original interpretation the word (vayetar) - "and he entreated" When applying to it the grammatical principle of (otiot geronot) interchangeable letters consisting of resh, ayin, hei, alef, ches) - whereby (ayin) changes to (ches) and the word (vayetar) acquires the form (veyahtor) - and he bored or penetrated (a space) As the parsha states: "Im b'mohteret yimotzei ha'ganav" - "If the thief is discovered while tunneling in " (Shemos 22:1) By implementing this change we lend another dimension of meaning to Yitzchok's prayer in attempting to establish a direct communication between himself and Hashem, Yitzch, 3, UsedVeryGood. signs of little wear on the cover., 0, UsedVeryGood. In this book, Paul A. Offit, a national expert on vaccines, challenges the modern-day false prophets who have so egregiously misled the public and exposes the opportunism of the lawyers, journalists, celebrities, and politicians who support them. Offit recounts the history of autism research and the exploitation of this tragic condition by advocates and zealots. He considers the manipulation of science in the popular media and the courtroom, and he explores why society is susceptible to the bad science and risky therapies put forward by many antivaccination activists. 9.5"x6.5", 298 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. A London researcher was the first to assert that the combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine known as MMR caused autism in children. Following this "discovery," a handful of parents declared that a mercury-containing preservative in several vaccines was responsible for the disease. If mercury caused autism, they reasoned, eliminating it from a child's system should treat the disorder. Consequently, a number of untested alternative therapies arose, and, most tragically, in one such treatment, a doctor injected a five-year-old autistic boy with a chemical in an effort to cleanse him of mercury, which stopped his heart instead. Children with autism have been placed on stringent diets, subjected to high-temperature saunas, bathed in magnetic clay, asked to swallow digestive enzymes and activated charcoal, and injected with various combinations of vitamins, minerals, and acids. Instead of helping, these therapies can hurt those who are most vulnerable, and particularly in the case of autism, they undermine childhood vaccination programs that have saved millions of lives. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence clearly shows that childhood vaccines are safe and does not cause autism. Yet widespread fear of vaccines on the part of parents persists..
