The causes and origins of the English Civil War Since the emergence of scholarly research in the 19th century, there have been many theories for what caused the English Civil War, which lasted from the summer of 1642 till around 1651. While many histories make sense, they do not really illustrate why exactly war was the outcome of the struggles in these times. However, this is hardly surprising because even contemporaries had problems identifying the origins of the war. The parliamentarian Bulstrode Whitelocke wrote in the summer of 1642, `it is strange to note how we have insensibly slid into the beginning of a civil war by one unexpected accident after another, as waves of the sea which have brought us thus far and we scarce know how`. Historians have debated whether the whig history, the bourgeois revolution, or religious differences were the cause of the war. In examination of the articles of the historians Glenn Burgess, Angus McInnes and John Morrill, it becomes explicitly clear that constitutionalism and the bourgeois revolution created problems and change in these times, but only religion was powerful enough to spark people`s decision to go to war.
