The author's aim is also to explore the links between Muslim thought in general and the geographical data in order to show how the Muslims integrated Islamic and geographical concepts to create a general and unified vision of the world. The Muslim image of the world is treated as a product of geographical science, and not merely as a product of religion. Thus, in addition to the chapters on the influence of Islam on geography, the main body of the text examines aspects of the image of the earth, oceans, seas, islands, rivers, and mountains. The study is based on a vast collection of original material covering a period from the 9th century and extending beyond the Middle Ages, through to the 17th century. It is almost entirely composed of oriental manuscript sources of Eastern origin, some hitherto unpublished, and comprises historical and literary writing, as well as marvel books and dictionaries. The text is illustrated with a few diagrams and maps. The rich Muslim intellectual heritage in the fields of cosmography, itinerary and astronomy contains a great number of works which preserve the ancient knowledge of such civilizations as the Greek, Roman, Persian, and Indian.
