In 1978, at the age of 26, Donley was named the youngest head coach in the country. Over the next four years, Donleys teams would compile an overall record of 28-9 (.757), winning the conference title in 1980 and 1981. Through 2009 and 63 years of Anderson football history, Donleys overall winning percentage stands as the best among all Anderson football coaches. In 1980, Donley earned a Master's Degree in education from Ball State University. Donley joined the Georgetown College staff as head coach in 1991. The high point of his career there came in 1991 when the Tigers went 13-1 (.929) and won the NAIA Division II National Football Championship.
