We have located editions of Coimbra, 1825 and 1836, this one of Paris, 1836, Pernambuco, 1837, and Coimbra, 1843. This was Castilho's first work of substantial length, and is still written in the classical style: in the following year he began producing works in the new Romantic style.Indeed, Castilho ranks (with Almeida Garrett and Herculano) as one of the three best Romantic writers in Portugal, and Bell notes that "His quadras . and his blank verse are alike so easy and natural, his style so harmonious and pure that, despite the lack of observation and originality in these long poems, they have not even to-day lost their place in Portuguese literature." Castilho published numerous works of poetry and prose, founded and edited the Revista universal lisbonense (1841-45), and began the series "Livraria Classica Portuguesa," for which he wrote the studies of Bernardes and Garcia de Resende. He also translated works of Ovid, Molière, Anacreon and Goethe - his Faust translation is particularly well-known for the controversy it raised among students of German language and literature ("a questão faustina"). Following Almeida Garrett's death and Herculano's retreat to Val-de-Lôbos, Castilho became the leading figure of the Romantic movement. His 1865 prologue to a work by Pinheiro Chagas, which condemned the young writers of Coimbra (Antero de Quental, Teofilo Braga, Vieira de Castro) for "nebulosidade," incited Quental to write Bom senso e bom gôsto.Castilho (1800-75), a native of Lisbon, became blind at the age of six but nevertheless went on to earn a degree in law from Coimbra. Aside from his literary production, he invented a new method for teaching children to read, the "methodo portuguez," and attempted to implement it while serving as Commissario Geral de Instrucção Primaria.*** Innocêncio I, 130-5; VIII, 134: giving the date 1837. The letter by Fernando Pessoa to Jaime Cortesão occupies 6 pages at the front of the book.Physician, political figure, poet, short story writer, dramatist and historian, Jaime [Zuzarte] Cortesão (Ançã, Cantanhede 1884-Lisbon 1960) was the brother of the historian Armando Cortesão and son of the philologist António Augusto Cortesão. Fernando Pessoa called him "O primeiro dos poetas da novíssima geração" (p. [8]). Elected parliamentary deputy from Porto, then served as a captain in the medical corps during World War I. With Leonardo Coimbra and other intellectuals he founded the review Nova Silva in 1907. In 1910 he collaborated with Teixeira de Pascoaes to found Águia. In 1912 Cortesão established the review Renascença Portuguesa, which he abandoned in 1921 to become one of the founders of Seara Nova. In 1919 he became director of the Biblioteca Nacional, a post from which he was fired in 1927 for presiding over the Junta Revolucionária established in Porto in a failed attempt to topple the military dictatorship. During his tenure there he had been perhaps the leading light of the "Grupo da Biblioteca Nacional" which included Raul Proença, Álvaro Pinto, Paxcoaes, António Sérgio, Aquilino Ribeiro, Raul Brandão, Leite de Vasconcelos, and Malheiro Dias. From 1927 until 1940 Cortesão lived in exile in France; when the Nazis invaded, he fled to Brazil, where he taught the history of the Portuguese discoveries at the university level in Rio de Janeiro. Returning to Portugal in 1957, he became involved in the presidential campaign of general Humberto Delgado, which resulted in him spending four days in prison in 1958, along with António Sérgio, Vieira de Almeida and Azevedo Gomes. That year he was elected President of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores.Provenance: Porbase lists twelve books written by J.[orge] Beleza de Miranda, published between 1955 and 1975.*** See Etelvina Santos in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 145-6; Fernando Oliveira in Biblos, I, 1316-8; Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, III, 295-7. Typographical ornament above caption title. Uncut. Horizontal foldline. In very good condition. Old ink number ("21") at top of first leaf; early ink manuscript note "Carta a Lopes" on final blank leaf verso. 10 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. After announcing in May 1822 that he would never publish again (Manifesto á naçao ou ultimas palavras impressas), Macedo breaks his silence with this letter signed at Forno do Tijolo, August 31, 1822. He recaps the accusations and persecutions that led him to cease writing and sets out what he regards as the necessities for a sound government, which include a strong religion. The letter is written to his staunch friend and fellow absolutist Joaquim José Pedro Lopes (on whom see Innocêncio IV, 107, 447 and XII, 93), here addressed as editor of the Gazeta Universal. This carta to Lopes is not to be confused with the thirty-two cartas that Macedo wrote in 1827 and published that year in Lisbon. Those letters are a vitriolic attack on Enlightenment thinkers, constitutional government, and other subjects bitter to the heart of the reactionary Macedo.José Agostinho de Macedo (1761-1831) was a prolific writer of prose and verse, best known for his aggressive pamphleteering on behalf of the absolutists: "Ponderous and angry like a lesser Samuel Johnson, he bullies and crushes his opponents in the raciest vernacular . . . his idiomatic and vigorous prose will always be read with pleasure" (Bell, Portuguese Literature, p. 282). His high reputation among contemporaries proved ephemeral. As a young man, Macedo caused so much trouble within the Augustinian Order that he was unfrocked in 1792, but an influential friend helped him retain his ecclesiastical status by obtaining a brief of secularization. Soon becoming a leading orator, he was named royal preacher in 1802.Macedo is notorious for his arrogance in literary matters: he condemned as worthless Homer's poems, which he had never read in the original, and believed his own epic Gama, 1811 (reworked and published as O Oriente, 1814), could have taught Camões how Os Lusiadas should have been written. When the public reception for O Oriente was less than enthusiastic, he published Censura dos Lusiadas, a detailed and virulent critique of Camões. In Os Burros, a satirical poem published 1812-1814, Macedo skewered a host of men and women, living and dead. Macedo's provoked Barbosa du Bocage's satirical poem Pena de Taliao: "Expõe no tribunal da eternidade / Monumentos de audacia, e não de engenho ...."*** Not located in Innocêncio (although IV, 202, nº 2318 and the cross-reference at XII, 203 look similar); on the author, see IV, 183-215 and XII, 200-3. Three-quarter page engraving on second leaf recto of a statue of St. John Nepomucene. Woodcut on title page of a sun with a coronet. In good to very good condition. (2 ll.), 11 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The fine three-quarter page engraving, copied from a German original and signed by the noted artist Debrie, shows two views of the bronze statue of São João Nepomuceno (St. John of Nepomuk), patron saint of Bohemia, that stands on a bridge in Prague, and includes a lengthy inscription by Debrie. The statue had recently performed miracles before the Prussian army during the War of the Austrian Succession. The text is written by an anonymous Portuguese who had only recently come to sympathize with the Austrian party in his country. D. João V of Portugal was married to Maria Ana, Archduchess of Austria (a Habsburg); after D. João suffered a stroke in 1742, she ruled as regent until his death in 1750. A good deal of antagonism existed in Portugal between supporters of Austria and of France. This author includes a list at the end of twelve condições for his conversion, among them that he will not believe any old rumors that are circulating, that he won't be forced to take a financial loss ("Que de nenhuma sórte serey obrigado a declarar a guerra ao meu dinheiro, fazendo apostas sobre estas materias"), and that he will read all the gazetas and suplementos, but will only give them the credit of literature, because they so often contain lies.John of Nepomuk (Nepomucene, ca. 1345-1393) was cast into the Vitava River (at Prague) because he refused to divulge secrets learned as confessor to the queen of Bohemia. He is therefore considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional. He was beatified in 1721 and canonized in 1729.Guilherme Francisco Lourenço Debrie was one of the most skilled and most prolific engravers in Portugal under D.
