In 'The Maritime Voyage of the Royal Family - The transfer of the Portuguese court to Brazil', the researcher Kenneth Light presents, for the first time, a reconstruction of this little known chapter of history. And he does so, from a unique perspective: from someone who was at sea. His starting point was documents, practically untouched up to the 1990 decade, in the National Archive of England. This is when he started his research: log books of the captains of English ships that accompanied the Portuguese squadron, as well as letters and reports sent to the English Admiralty. Light describes, in detail, the ships, their routes to Brazil, their crews and the climatic and maritime conditions during the voyage - all this helps to compose a detailed picture of the unending journey. The terrible quality of the food, the hard discipline imposed on the sailors and the storms at sea, increase the tense ambience that existed during the greater part of the journey. This book also includes mini-biographies of the principal personages, a description of the Portuguese fleet and the British squadron, treaties and decrees, as well as a glossary of nautical terms. The author also registers the audacity and the courage of the decision of D. Joao, which enabled Portugal to become the only country, invaded by Napoleon, to maintain intact the royal family and court. In addition, he transformed Rio de Janeiro from a villa to the capital of the Portuguese Empire. It was the beginning of the process that resulted in Brazil becoming a nation.
